He Stands!

For the record... MOM... he is not about to fall out. And he can't pull to a stand like that in his crib. I just set him standing, and holding onto the side to see if he could actually stand. So of course we took a picture because we were pretty amazed that he is so talented. And also, yes, I do encourage my child to do naughty things. So he will turn out like me :)

Love, Katie

Oops! And he falls!!

July 27, 2006

This Sunday is our 2nd anniversary. Only 2 years and we already have a 6 month old baby. Considering we didn't decide to add an addition to our family until we'd been married almost a year, both of us are a little shell-shocked to realize that it's only been 2 years. We thought for sure it was at least 3... The last few years have been amazing. What an adventure marriage is. I couldn't have picked anyone better to love for eternity. Tim is such a great person and he truly has such a good heart. He always makes me laugh and he is always telling me jokes and trying to get me to smile if I'm sad or upset. I love that we can look at eachother and know exactly what the other one of us is thinking. We laugh a lot. We think so alike but our personalities are so different. It is the perfect combination. Tim is very outgoing and extroverted and friendly and I'm more shy and reserved. We push and stretch eachother in exactly the right ways and we learn alot from eachother. He is so good for me. We also have such fun together. Discovering that you can truly love someone more every single day was a huge eye opener for me. I thought that was just something people said. Looking at the two of us and how perfectly we connect and fit together makes me feel like we were made for eachother. It is such a great feeling. I could never have made a better decision in my life than to marry my sweet husband, and I am blessed for that choice every day. I love you baby!

Well, on Friday, Chase's Nana (Julia) is coming to stay with Chase, and Tim and I are going on a little weekend trip for our anniversary. (p.s. dear tim, I apologize for being pregnant and cranky last year on our anniversary. love, katie). Also I am making a video of our last few years so I will put that up sometime.

Traveling with a Baby

So Tim already blogged about our cruise. But I thought I would write a quick post about traveling with Chase. A couple people asked us at the airport, and some friends asked us when we got back, if we had any tips for traveling with babies. So here are some things that we brought and couldn't live without, and some ideas we had that helped the trip go smoothly. They're not in any particular order :)

1) A hang-on-the-back-of-the-door shoe organizer- this was the single greatest thing we brought. In a hotel, or especially in a tiny cruise room, it is great to be able to hang it on the bathroom door and organize all your baby stuff, sunscreen, shower stuff, etc. It is so much easier to find everything and it also keeps it up out of the way. From now on I am keeping ours in our luggage and bringing it anytime we go anywhere.

2) Fisher-Price rainforest soother- If your child doesn't have one of these obviously you don't need it. But Chase usually goes to sleep to this, and so we brought it along. It was great because it helped him go to sleep much faster, and made his bed on the floor seem more like home.

3) Cheerios (the best distraction ever and something to tide him over until he can get a real meal)

4) Formula sticks-whoever invented these is amazing. They're basically pre-measured tubes of formula so all you have to do is bring a bottle of water, and when your baby gets hungry you empty the tube in, shake it up, and its ready. I think Enfamily makes them. They're great for vacation when you can't always nurse. I bring them to church too and always keep some in our diaper bag just in case

5) Stainstick (trust me, when you can't wash your kids clothes immediately, you are going to need this)

6) Sunglasses or goggles- "Does my child really need these considering I try to keep him out of the sun and no way am I going to dunk him in the water?" Yes your child needs these; if you take him in the pool inevitably old men who think they're still young (*cough tim*) are going to be doing cannonballs, and little kids are going to be splashing and kicking. Either one of these will keep splashes of water out of your kids eyes great. This is especially good for the ocean, since your child will likely scream bloody murder if he or she gets salt in her eyes (this is just a guess. we didn't take Chase in the ocean :) ) Also both of them are only like 2 or 3 bucks at Walmart, and yes, the child-sized swim goggles will fit a 6 month old if you crank them tight and put the nose-adjustment on the smallest setting :)

7) Huggies Little Swimmers Spray-On sunscreen- this stuff sprays on clear, smells good, and is SPF 50. It is super easy to put on too. I love this stuff. Chase didn't get burned at all on our cruise. Don't forget a sunscreen stick to use on their face.

8)A blow-up minipool- If you're going to be somewhere your baby can't swim in the pool that is. It keeps them cool and they have a blast playing in it. If you're going on a cruise you can ask for an icebucket and use the fresh water from the pool showers to fill it up. Then you can dump it down the drain on deck when you're done. It's better than taking your kid in the crowded salt water pool anyways :)

9) Disposable bibs- Usually we just use the plastic ones for Chase, but it is much easier on vacation to bring a disposable one you can just throw away and not worry about cleaning. They're 6 for $1 at Babies R Us, or they sell them in packs of 40 or so at Walmart for about $5. Keep some of these in your diaper bag too! I love these.

10)A small umbrella stroller- we have a medium-sized stroller and we didn't even bring that one. Cruise hallways are narrow, elevators are small, and lugging something heavy on vacation is never a good idea. They also usually have sunshades to keep your baby out of the sun. Another good idea we had was to safety pin a swaddling blanket to the top of the sunshade, and when he was tired and overstimulated from seeing new places or people, we just pulled the blanket over the stroller and made him a little tent. It makes it much easier for them to go to sleep. The one we got has a little bag that attatches to the back so you can keep toys, diapers, bottles, etc. there. You'll want that, or one with a basket underneath. We got ours from Babies R Us for about $20.

11) A large caribbeaner- you can use it to attatch toys to high-chairs strollers etc. We have those rings you can use to attath toys but they are too small to fit around most restauraunt high-chairs and you'll want something to keep baby entertained during dinner.

12) A dinky plug-in nightlight- hotels and cruiseship rooms are often very dark and if your baby's still waking up in the middle of the night to eat you might want to bring one of these so you don't have to turn on a bright light. It also helps you not trip over all your luggage...

13) A bulb syringe and saline drops- Another thing that you pack while highly doubting you'll ever use. I was so glad we brought ours; we had to use it every night and every morning or he wouldn't have been able to breathe or sleep at all. Although it seems really random, I think its a great idea even if your baby's not sick, because a lot of baby's will develop stuffy noses for a day or so after flying.

14) Lysol wipes- Trust me, you will want to anti-bac everything from restaurant high-chairs to rented car-seats to hotel porta cribs.... yuck. Another great thing to always keep in your diaper bag.

15) A bunch of cheap bottles and dishwashing wipes cut into small squares- If you won't have a dishwasher that is. Bring enough bottles so you only have to wash them once while onboard, and use the little wipes to clean them easily. You could also bring one of those samples of dishwashing soap that you sometimes get in the mail.

16) A portable DVD player/laptop and Signing Time/Winnie the Pooh/some other kids show- even if you don't normally let your kid watch tv, this is a great idea for keeping them entertained on the plane. You can turn the volume on really low, or usually they're content watching it without sound.

If you can, bring a change of clothes for you and your husband and the baby in your carry-on. If you're flying for awhile, inevitably you baby will spit-up or poop on one of you.

Also for the record, TSA and the airport WILL let you bring liquid baby food, and pumped milk/formula/water to make a bottle, through security. You just have to declare it before you go through. They're usually really nice about it too. And strollers do not count as luggage if you bring it to the gate, and have them gate-check it. Same goes for carseats, but only if you lug it to the gate. On most airlines you can bring your baby's carseat to the gate, even if you haven't bought him a ticket, and if there are empty seats they will let you set up his carseat and let him sit in a plane seat. (If not they'll just gate check it.) Although I think its just as easy to hold him on your lap personally.

When they call you up to get a tag for your gate-checked stroller ask if there are any empty rows. Usually there are and they will put you in a row to yourself which is great because you can pile all your extra baby stuff on the empty 3rd seat.

You might've heard you should give your baby a bottle as you take-off to keep his ears from popping, but twice Chase was asleep and another time he got hungry before we took off, and he never had any trouble with his ears. I think a binky would work just as well.

Is it hard traveling with a baby? Not really. As long as he's fairly easy-going. I'm sure its much harder traveling with a toddler. We had a great time on vacation and Chase had a blast on the cruise, although if we hadn't gone with my family, we probably wouldn't have gone just the 3 of us. Vacation will be much more relaxing if you have some baby-sitters on hand so you can do some fun things yourself and spend some time with your spouse. Baby will also love all the extra attention.

So this post is a little longer than I expected... Anyways, theres our advice. If you're traveling in the winter this list probably won't help much! Maybe I will write another one around Christmas for a 1-year old :)

Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skulls

Katie and I recently had the opportunity to get away and go on a little date to the movies. We dropped Chase off with Grandma Julia, and we were off to the Jordan Commons to see the latest installment in the Indiana Jones trilogy+one (what do you call a series of four... a Quadrilogy maybe...).

Those of you who read my blog of Randomness know that I love to review things, and consequently I cannot talk about anything entertainment wise without rating it, so I'm giving this movie an A-. Being a huge Indiana Jones fan, it was great for me to finally be able to see one of his films on the big screen. Words can hardly describe how excited I got when you first see Indy pick up the fedora and his theme song started playing. From that point on I was hooked and loved every minute of the film. There have been a lot of mixed reviews regarding the latest Indy flick, and to those of you who were critical of the plot all I have to say is that if you can accept that the arc of the covenant melts off peoples faces, crazy guys in India can rip your heart out, and the holy grail can keep you alive in a cave for like 1000 years, then nothing in this film should come to you as being unbelievable. I know that some critics of the film have pointed out that they miss the religious element from the previous films, but in response to that, I bet all the Mayans out there are happy that their story is finally getting told :)

Needless to say, Katie and I had a great time! We laughed at Indy's one liners, and at Mutt's constant mocking Indy for being old, and all around really enjoyed the movie (and the chance that we had to be on a date alone ;)

So, if you haven't seen Indy IV yet, go see it, you won't regret it!

6 months

That's right, Chase is 6 months! I can't even believe it. He is growing up so fast, and he is more fun everyday. He loves toys and tickles and books and peek-a-boo, and he loves to watch Signing Time. He can sit pretty well by himself now, and he is still chewing on everything in sight. He's been sick for the last week so he has been kind of miserable. He sounds like darth vader when he breathes, and it is the saddest thing. Also using the bulb syringe in his nose makes me feel like a terrible parent because he hates it and he screams bloody murder when I use it. So, I admit, I usually make Tim do it. Anyways, he had his 6 mos. well-baby today and he weighed in at 16 pounds, 14 oz (he just doubled his birthweight) and he is 26.5 inches long. He's right at 50th percentile for everything except his head circumference which is big (because of all his smart brains of course). He is getting so mobile and everytime I put him down to play or down for a nap, he ends up on his tummy. He has such a big appetite. He never refuses food or acts full. He just keeps eating as long as the spoon keeps coming! My mom gave him a little box of cheerios, and on our plane ride back from Florida he had some of those. I'm always terrified he's going to choke so we broke them in half, but he loved them, and I am enjoying being able to take a snack for him in my purse everywhere we go.

So I made a video of Chase's first 6 months. I think I am getting better at Movie Maker. I actually figured out how to put music to it and it took about half as long as the last one I did. It is a pretty fun hobby. I apologize that the first song is about a girl... just imagine that it's about a boy. Also I realize that my "pregnant pictures" aren't that great, but I am stupid and we didn't really take any pictures of me when I was pregnant. The first one is at Disneyland when we found out I was pregnant, and the two at the waterfall are the day we found out we were having a boy! The last 2 are both when I was 8 months, and I know the last one looks really dumb, but that is because the picture wasn't of my tummy, I just cropped it down so you could actually see it. haha. So my advice, if you are pregnant, is take a ton of pictures of your belly. Even if you don't want to. Because you will want them later, I promise. Also, this video is kind of long, so if you don't have 5 minutes you probably don't want to watch it!

Love to you all,

-Tim & Katie

P.S. before you watch this you have to pause the music in the pink box at the bottom of our blog so that you can hear the video music.

Our Cruise!

Our family, along with Katie's family, recently went on a cruise together to the Bahamas. This was our first major family vacation with Chase, so needless to say we were a little nervous about how he would deal with the flights, sleeping in foreign cribs and so on. Fortunately lil' Mr. Chase was an angel as always, and aside from our final flight, was great! He even got a cold right as we got there and still did great. I don't know why people have reservations about traveling with their children. It's a blast! I think it was actually much harder for Katie when we got home and his nap and sleep schedule was messed up and off by a few hours.

Along with riding around on a big ship, and eating all we could eat (although I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who truly took advantage of that) we also made some fun stops in a few different places I'd like to highlight.

We stayed in Florida for a few days before getting on the ship, and our hotel was on the water. We went out back and threw some bread in the water and some huge carp came swimming up along with some turtles. It was one of the craziest things we saw. The carp were probably 3 feet long. These were BIG guys. They could have eaten Chase!

Nassau was our first port, and for those of you have never been there, it's about as close to paradise as anywhere I've ever been. Maybe that's why celebrities such as Mick Jagger, Tiger Woods, and Oprah all own houses on Fantasy Island, just off the coast of Nassau. While there we went to the coolest museum ever, "Pirates of Nassau," below are a few pictures of the museum highlights. We also walked through some of the straw markets and Katie delined having her hair braided about 500 times.

Our favorite stop was Key West. We started the day with a piece of frozen pie on a stick from the Key Lime Pie factory. We then made our way to Uncle Ernie's for a family picture. This is kind of becoming a family tradition every time we make it to Key West. We stopped here on our honeymoon cruise to Mexico and I wish I could find the picture we took at the Hemingway house so you could see them side by side, but this time, with another addition to the family :)

In the early afternoon, Katie and I went on a little adventure, we went parasailing, which was awesome! The views of the island and the Atlantic Ocean were amazing, we loved it! Katie was nervous as first but said it was much less scary than she expected. (Although she promises me she will never jump out of a plane with me.)

After parasailing, Katie and I, along with Lynn and Dan, made our way to a private beach in Key West that was beautiful, white sand, palm trees, and super warm water! We did some snorkeling, I found a live conch(too bad I didn't have the camera)and lots of fish.

Unfortunately they canceled our stop at Royal Caribbean's private island even though the weather was beautiful. We were really sad not to go hang out on hammocks and laze on the beach, and Lauren and I were sad to miss our scuba trip. But we had fun at the pool on board, ordering some pina coladas, and having lunch at Johnny Rockets. And Chase had a blast in his own little kiddie pool, since babies are not allowed in cruiseline pools.

We went to a comedian magician show that was really good, some of us went to an ice carving demonstration, went to the spa, ate a lot of soft serve ice cream, watched a lot of Arrested Development with Dan, and ordered free room service at midnight.

As for Chase, I think his favorite part was all the attention he got from his Grandma, Grandpa, Aunt Lauren, and even his Uncle Dan.

It was a great time, and we are looking forward to many more family vacations! Although after trying out a few different lines we have decided that the best cruiseline is officially Disney. We're excited to take another family cruise in a few years when Chase is old enough to be excited about breakfast with Mickey :)

Baseball Game

Last week we went to a Bee's baseball game with my sister and Gary. It was a good time, and Chase was pretty into it. He had some of Lauren's sno-cone because it was blasted hot. Then I let him chew on the straw of my drink. Unfortunately he figured out that if he sucked long enough he actually got a drink. So I had to take it away... He liked the little sip of Fanta he got though! Here are some pictures.

Yup, he's gangsta'

Also there were these two old ladies sitting behind us who Chase was flirting with. They were way into the game and they also kept saying "Bless his heart" every time someone struck out. It was pretty funny. I imagine they were in "A League of their Own" about 50 years ago.

I was going to blog about our cruise next since Tim is at an EQP meeting, and Chase and I are sick, but Chase has finally fallen asleep so maybe I will try to get a nap today...
